Kaleidoscope: 80's in April Edition

April-Playlist-blog-graphic.jpg

It’s April and for this installment of Kaleidoscope we’re going back in time yet again! So slip on your leg warmers and get out your walkman, because we’re throwing it back to a decade where pop culture reigned supreme and advancements in hair technology was at an all-time high: it’s an 80’s playlist!

Why the 80’s?

Everyone loves a good decades playlist, right? I decided to theme this month’s playlist because of its alliterative properties next to the word “April” and the fact that I’ve had a lot of people anticipating this theme ever since the 70’s playlist back in September. I tried to be more creative with choosing a theme, but sometimes your first thought is the best one.

I feel as though the 80’s have some of the greatest songs in musical history, but what I really love most about this decade is that some of the most well-known and adored one-hit-wonders were released in this 10 year time period. Maybe the MTV generation demanded the next biggest thing, so when the Soft Cell’s & Dexys Midnight Runners’ of the world couldn’t follow up their massive hits, they quickly disposed of for your Rick Astley’s or a-ha’s. I don’t know why this seems to be the case, but I can say for sure that one-hit-wonders from the 80s should be appreciated to the point where they’re practically their own separate genre.

Stats & Tracklist

I learned from the 70’s playlist that it’s impossible for almost anyone to pick just 3 songs from an enitre decade, so to avoid any restrictions I left song submissions wide open, which is a contributing factor as to why there’s nearly 100 songs on this month’s playlist.

Unlike the 70’s playlist back in September, there wasn’t nearly as much overlap in songs as I anticipated. Despite this, there were a lot of artists or bands that appear at least twice on this playlist; Metallica, Talking Heads, & Billy Joel to name a few. There was acutally a three-way tie for the most frequently selected artist between Price, Queen, & Bryan Adams, who each have three separate songs featured this month.

As for the songs themselves, there were also quite a few that were picked twice, such as classics like “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “Don’t Stop Believin,’” but there was yet another tie for top position! “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) by Dead or Alive & “Pour Some Sugar On Me” by Def Leppard were both selected to be included in the playlist three times each.

And with that, we arrive at the track listing for J Miller’s soundtrack to April!
